L.I.F.E’s Statement:

We invite you to come out for a day of workshops centered on hip-hop culture, knowledge, social and civic engagement, critical thinking/theory, and resistance.

Students need to bring sneakers they didn’t wear outside, and come dressed comfortably, preferably in sweats, if you plan on attending the Breakdancing workshop.

LIFE is a student organization at Rhode Island College that strives to cultivate strong leaders within our RIC community through increasing awareness and creating openings and (discursive) spaces which can create opportunities for intellectual, cultural, and personal growth. Our goal is to address the complex needs and problems of our campus and the greater RI community.

LIFE is happy to announce that we are working with the independent music company Nomadic Wax to bring a day-long schedule of events, including workshops, discussions, presentations, and a live music performance. (http://www.nomadicwax.org/)

Registration will begin at 10am on Friday, April 19 in the Faculty Center South, Donovan Dining Center. The registration fee is $10, group discounts available for organizations. A registration website will follow up soon.

The conference will center around hip-hop culture’s social and political potential; the theme is “Be Creative.” The goal of the conference is to demonstrate to students and youth how hip-hop and cultural expression can be tools for building revolutionary social movements, and they do this by:

Nomadic Wax uses music, media and the arts to promote social change and cultural exchange, creates educational opportunities for people to learn about issues of global importance though media and entertainment and is a platform for socially engaged musicians, media producers and artists worldwide to spread their message and reach a global audience.

They will be doing 6 workshops, a keynote panel, and a live performance. We invite any and all participating organizations to come out and be a part of this day-long conference, which will be both fun and instructive for those working in and with the community to build movements and work for social justice.

Workshops include instructive presentations on breakdancing, freestyling, turntablism, Mexico’s resistance movements, and a live concert featuring artists from all over the country and Pawtucket’s very own Chachi Carvalho. (http://www.chachihiphop.com/about
