MIAMI – Today, Senator Dwight Bullard (D-39) released the following statement regarding Marissa Alexander:

“On September 14, 2013 Marissa Alexander will mark her 32nd birthday – behind bars. She’s been away from her family, unable to embrace her loved ones, and unable to hold her newborn child all because of a single gunshot to frighten away her attacker. It’s disheartening to think that a mother who was the victim of harsh brutality in her own home is now serving a 20 year sentence for defending herself.”

“As her birthday approaches, I am continuing to urge members of the community who want to see justice to contact Governor Rick Scott’s office as well as the Florida Cabinet and tell them to bring Marissa home to her family. The last thing we want to do is send a message that says we lock up victims of domestic violence in Florida and deprive them of their children.
