To Wail for the Whales
by Reza Clifton
They say the whales
Are losing their hearing
And I don’t know what to do.
You see
Wind is not just something
You feel on your face
But also something you see
From dress lines,
Strands of hair
And animals
Flying and thrashing
In the air.
To something you hear
like the thud of heavy objects
Unfastened from their homes
To a whistle
Scratching sound barriers
And reminding us
Of its existence
And might.
They say the whales
Are losing their hearing
And I don’t know what to do.
They speak and move
Through the language of sound
Much like I do.
Percussion, bass
And always something new
Or a hand clap,
Muted trumpet
Or perfectly held C note.
I rock, I crave, I follow
I ingest, digest and regurgitate sound.
My ears a harpoon
Constantly spearing and retrieving
A melodic encounter
Or sonic memory.
I dream, I talk, I build my future
Through music
And I use her to thwart
Enemies that live
Inside and out.
I cower and crumble
Even now
At the thought of it disappearing
Or being taken from me.
They say the whales
Are losing their hearing
And I don’t know what to do.
Do we fight, plead
Or run away?
Do we let greed, assimilation
And the arrogance
Of the past
Lead us into
The arms of the devil?
I wail for the whales
I look to the world
Yet I also thank
The longing and dedication
Cast as a net
That will collect
One eye and ear at a time
Just as I’ve been caught,
For I
Can tell
you this
The whales
Are losing
Their hearing
And we have
To do
something.
The question is
What
Are we ready
To
Undo?
